What Is QR Code Certificate Verification and Why Does It Matter?
Certificates are only as valuable as the trust people place in them. In a world where PDFs can be edited and fake credentials are a real concern, QR code certificate verification is becoming the standard for proving a certificate is genuine — instantly and publicly.
Here's how it works, why it matters, and how to add it to your certificates for free.
How QR Code Certificate Verification Works
When you generate a certificate with verification enabled, three things happen behind the scenes:
A unique verification ID is generated
A random, unguessable ID (e.g., a1B2c3D4e5F6) is assigned to the certificate and stored in a secure database along with the certificate details.
A QR code is embedded in the PDF
The QR code encodes a link to the verification page: buildcertificates.com/verify.html?id=a1B2c3D4e5F6. It's printed directly on the certificate.
Anyone can verify it by scanning
The employer, institution, or recipient scans the QR code with any smartphone camera. The verification page shows the certificate details — no login, no account needed.
The key insight: the verification page is served from our servers, not the PDF. So even if someone edits the PDF's text, the QR code will show the original, tamper-proof data.
Why It Matters for Credibility
A certificate without verification is just a nicely formatted document. Anyone with basic PDF editing skills can change a name, a date, or a course title. QR verification closes that gap.
For recipients
A scannable QR code on your certificate signals professionalism. It shows that the issuing organization takes verification seriously — and that the certificate wasn't just knocked up in Word.
For employers and HR teams
A three-second phone scan tells an employer everything they need to know: who the certificate was issued to, what course they completed, who issued it, and when. No phone call. No email to the institution.
For educators and businesses
Verified certificates increase the perceived value of your courses and programs. Graduates are more likely to share them on LinkedIn and other platforms when they include a scannable verification element — which is free advertising for your organization.
What Does the Verification Page Show?
Scanning the QR code opens a public page at buildcertificates.com/verify.html that displays:
- ✅ Certificate Verified (or ❌ Not Found, if the ID is invalid)
- Recipient name
- Certificate title
- Course or event name
- Issuer name
- Date issued
- Unique verification ID
The page requires no login and works on any device — desktop, mobile, or tablet.
Is the Database Permanent?
Yes. Verification records are stored persistently in Netlify Blobs. Once issued, a certificate's verification record is available indefinitely — so a certificate issued today will still be verifiable in years to come.
How to Enable QR Verification
On BuildCertificates.com, QR verification is enabled by default. You can disable it using the dropdown in the form if you prefer a certificate without a QR code, but we recommend leaving it on.
Via the API, set "verification": true in your request options — or omit it entirely, as it defaults to true.
